Financial District

Map of Neighborhood Local Schools
Bordered by Battery Park City, Tribeca and South Street Seaport the Financial District’s deep and protected harbor was recognized from the time of the earliest European explorers as a natural phenomenon uniquely suited to the needs of sailing vessels. Since representatives of the Netherlands plated a trading post at the southern tip Manhattan in 1624, the areas mission as a hub of commerce has remained largely unchanged. The Financial Districts winding streets date from the era when this was the Netherland’s outpost of trade in the New World and testify to their origins as village pathways. Home to Wall Street, which got its name because it follows the line of the Palisade wall that the Dutch erected across the northern perimeter of New Amsterdam in 1653 to protect against attack from the British New Englanders.
