Harlem |
|
The Dutch called this village New Harlem after the old Haarlem they left behind in Europe. The center of this village was situated near 125th street on the Harlem River, though the settlement spread across most of the northern end of the island. Harlem’s geography gave rise to its early, descriptive titles of Harlem Plain or Harlem Valley. Harlem was an agricultural area until the mid 19th century when mass transportation connected the city in the south with these northern reaches. After the Civil War, St Nicholas Avenue was a favorite racing ground for the moneyed set to display their pedigreed steeds.
