Lincoln Center |
|
Lincoln center is an example of an institution arriving, being named for, and subsuming the original name of the place in which it was constructed. Lincoln square existed nearly a century before the performing arts complex was completed. Unaware of the previously existing Lincoln Square, some people assume that Lincoln Center took it name from Lincoln Kirstein, co-founder of the New York City Ballet. But in fact, as Lincoln Squares name was conferred in 1872, chances are good that it was chosen to recall the president who had been assassinated just seven years earlier. And like, Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, the choice of a name evocative of a glorious figure or moment in our country’s history may have been a gesture inspired less by patriotism than by marketing and one designed to lend respectability and saleability to an area soon to be urbanized.
